Accident rates

Copebrás Catalão and Mining

The increased accident frequency rates at CatalĂŁo unit and in Mining have been analyzed on a systemic basis.

The difficult perception of the hazard conditions, associated with the changes occurred both in the productive processes and in the functional staff in the past two years, has been identified as the main cause for the increased accident frequency rates in the CatalĂŁo and Ouvidor units.

The Safety Improvement Plan comprises the necessary elements for implementation of sustainable improvement in all aspects involved in the accidents occurred. Two aspects to be emphasized in this context are the implementation and the development of the Safety Risk Management Process (SRMP) and Leadership Qualification (VFL).

The development of the SRMP implementation process will allow and ensure the adoption of practical and objective tools for perception of the hazard conditions, added to those already applied and to the improved change management in activities involving hazard conditions. This will allow effective control and monitoring of the risks involved in the company’s activities. Regarding leadership qualification, the application of the VFL concepts, associated with behavioral verification, makes the systems be kept active.

Codemin – three years without lost time injuries

The Codemin unit, in Niquelândia (GO), has reasons for celebration. In January, 2010, the plant completed three years without lost time injuries. There are many reasons for this success. Codemin’s safety performance has improved significantly in the past years.

Anglo American has made important investments in the implementation of the machine and people segregation project in the unit, as well as in the adaptation of the facilities, equipment and safety management system to the requirements of Anglo Fatal Risks Standards, Vehicle Management Plan and Anglo Safety Way.

Barro Alto

The safety indicators in Barro Alto in the year of 2009 – which resulted, for example, in a Lost Time Injury Frequency Rate (LTIFR) of 0.06 – represent a significant performance, which make them a world reference and benchmarking in safety management in mineral projects under design and pre-commissioning phase.

The adoption of action plans focusing on compliance with Anglo American’s important safety management programs, the suitable risk management in the several work fronts, and the investments in awareness training for all the labor force in 2009 can be identified as the essential causes of this performance.

Copebrás Cubatão

Copebrás in Cubatão has recorded a high safety performance. Located in one of the oldest industrial complexes in the country, this Copebrás plant benefits from a very favorable historical structure, as safety is a widespread concept in the region. The company endeavors to share this collective awareness with other companies of the Group and with companies belonging to Cubatão Petrochemical Complex.

Occupational diseases

In 2009, there was no new case of occupational disease. The company owns an Occupational Health and Medical Control Program for disease risk control and prevention. Codemin/Barro Alto-Mine unit performs periodical PCMSO examinations, and, in Cubatão, employees’ health is monitored and controlled.
