Social Projects

Overcoming the Crisis

Anglo American’s projects in the social field suffered less than could have been expected as a result of the economic crisis due to the fact that many actions that were performed in 2009 were the result of incentives that were approved at the end of 2008, a much better year in financial terms.

The company reserved a little over 5 million Reais in cash for its social projects, without commercial engagement or pro bono. The biggest share, around 4 million Reais, was obtained through the Foundation for the Economic and Social Development of Barro Alto (Fundesba) and was invested in Barro Alto in the reduction of impact and the development of infrastructure and services offered for public benefit, such as the works of medium complexity on the new hospital and emergency care, in schools and day care centers.

This amount also includes the continuity of the partnerships with Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) – like Care Brazil, the Center for Action in Public Policies (NAPP) and the Gol Letter Foundation (FGL) – and with consultants that work to train the different segments of urban or rural undertakings and diverse entities of the community so that the economy can grow in a sustainable way.

Some projects that were carried out in other cities where Anglo American operates – like Costurando o Futuro (Sewing the Future) in Niquelândia, and Estilo Eco Dique (Eco Dike Style) in Cubatão – were financed by partnerships between the company and the municipalities, entities and other companies, bringing about, through the sum of all these efforts, important results in income generation, mainly for groups of women from the respective cities.

At the end of 2008, funds obtained through the cultural stimulus laws were used for guitar orchestra projects in each city, many movie sessions and circus presentations at schools and in public squares, as well as reading events and a return to Cubatão’s history with archeological workshops in Cubatão.

The funds destined to sporting activities by the stimulus law allowed the development of the Goiás Wheelchair Basketball Federation project for 6 cities in the state of Goiás, including Catalão, Ouvidor and Niquelândia.

This project promoted the creation or the strengthening of local centers for the registration of disabled people and their preparation for practicing basketball, as well as the learning process related to the production of special wheelchairs.

The continuity of this support, which totaled more than 210,000 Reais in 2009, will be used to train disabled people in those cities where Anglo American operates to progressively integrate professionally into society as well as in our own company. Furthermore, via FUMCAD (Municipal Fund for Child and Adolescent Support), the company brought another 70,000 Reais to every city where it operates to bring continuity to FGL’s orientation work with entities that work with non-formal sports and educational youth formation, as well as with mediation in conflict situations that arise during adolescence.
