PEC
Community Involvement Plan – 2009/2011 triennial
The “Intercâmbio” (Exchange) Community Forums are meetings held every semester with the communities, during which the company presents the results of its sustainable development actions and the progress of the Community Involvement Plans (PECs) to which it committed itself, as well as discussing specific topics of interest in the region, or requested by the participants.
In May 2009, in the cities of Cubatão (SP), Catalão, Ouvidor, Barro Alto and Niquelândia (all in Goiás) the seventh 8th “Intercâmbio” (Exchange) Community Forums were held, at which time formal feedback was given to the SEAT consultations from the previous year, and there were group discussions on actions and solutions for relevant questions in each community. This year’s forums also feature a presentation by Silvia Almeida, Social Responsibility assistant at Anglo American, regarding the company’s STD/Aids policy.
Another noteworthy point of the event was the presentation and discussion of the results of consultations made for the SEAT 2, the second phase of the socio-economic assessment program of Anglo American. The objective of the consultations was to understand the changes that took place in the communities, in the activities of the company and surrounding areas, as well as to evaluate the first cycle of application of the SEAT and the performance of the latest PEC, which occurred between 2006 and 2008. The discussion held in the forums is helping the company to validate the perceptions and important questions for the communities, as well as their proposals of the new PEC, which was developed for the 2009/2011 triennial.
In November 2009, the 8th “Intercâmbio” (Exchange) Community Forum was held, during which Anglo American formally handed over its new PEC, this time with the inputs from the municipalities. These regular meetings reaffirmed the company’s commitment to actively participate in the development of the communities where it is active. In the case of Cubatão and Catalão, communities where the niobium and phosphate assets will be sold, the November exchange had an even greater impact in the sense that it prepared the community to “do its part,” creating actions based on the discussions on development of their respective municipalities.
