Monitoring

Methodology of relationship with the communities

In 2009, no significant incidents occurred. The company uses SEAT as monitoring methodology (with a 3-year cycle), which identifies the communities’ dependency level by means of a set of criteria like the number of people employed, the dependent businesses and the use of the local economy. Community profile maps are also maintained, which are updated from a virtual permanent channel (Fale Conosco (Talk to Us)) and a telephone channel, from the visits and the “Intercâmbio” (Interchange) Forums.

The Anglo American Group maintains emergency plans for the treatment of injuries linked to the company’s processes, which need to be simulated regularly.

Every year, a risk evaluation of the past period and on all fronts, including social, is carried out. This methodology will be improved with the implementation of the Anglo Social Way, which was started in 2009.

The incidents listed in the risk evaluation already contain action plans that are defined on a case-by-case basis and involve a decision tree – depending on the level and the extent of the incident, on the services that should be called upon (local or regional), on the people needed, on the functions, on the equipment and on the capital. For unforeseen incidents, there is a decision hierarchy to follow, that can involve the corporate structure or even the administrative center in London.

These procedures are in the phases of detailed documentation and implementation in a global software program, named Enablon, which will make it possible to prepare a historical and statistical evaluation of the incidents in all businesses.

Identification of Properties

In 2009, the identification of existing properties in the area in always done in the mineral research phase. A map of landowners is made, and they are necessarily consulted during the preparation phase of the Environmental/Social Impact Study, that complies with Brazilian Law, and in the case of Anglo American, also complies with the social communication directives of the IFC (World Bank). This map is maintained and updated for the continuous evaluation of interest (to acquire) or risks.

The 4C tool of SEAT2 deals specifically with conflict management, defining what a conflict is and providing indicators and criteria such that every project/operation can minimize the impacts of such conflicts. There had been no registration of its use until now.

Regarding indigenous people, there is a specific tool within SEAT 24F, produced in 2009, that is applied and should be used according to the site’s situation in relation to the presence or not of indigenous people in areas influenced by the company’s activities. No area around the current Anglo American sites is close to indigenous people.

Resettlement Policies and Activities

In 2009, there were no resettlements. From 2010 on, with the implementation of the Anglo Social Way, the land acquisition sector – together with community relationships – will be able to have more adequate registers and place this information in the Enablon Database.
