Cine Tela Brasil (Cinescreen Brazil) (Cubatão and Barro Alto) – This is a mobile movie theatre traveling through Brazil to bring movies to those who don’t have access to a conventional movie theatre. In the first half of July 2009, Anglo American promoted free showings of domestic films in Cubatão via Cinescreen Brazil. There were six days of showings, three in each neighborhood – Jardim Casqueiro and Jardim Nova República, with four sessions per day. A total of 4,375 spectators of all ages passed through the traveling movie theatre set up in these neighborhoods. The project passed through Barro Alto on November 20, 21 and 22, 2009. In this city, approximately 2,350 people watched the movie sessions. The company spent 420,000 Reais on this action.
Programa de Educação Patrimonial e Cidadania (Patrimonial and Citizenship Education Program) (Cubatão) – To promote reflection on the cultural heritage
in the communities where it is active, Anglo American sponsors the Heritage and Civic Education Program in CubatĂŁo. In October 2009, the program performed an excavation simulation in Alinas Park (archeological site of the town). The participants were students of city schools and children of company employees and contractors, aged 8 through 12.
By means of lectures about the history of Cubatão and the region’s cultural heritage, the program seeks to raise awareness about the importance of knowledge of the historical and cultural heritage for education of residents.
The program, sponsored by Anglo American, is carried out by Via Gutenberg and Zanettini Archeology, with the support of the Ministry of Culture, of the municipality of CubatĂŁo and of the Regional Centre for Archeological Research of the Chondrichthyes (cartilaginous fish) Research and Study Center. All told, presentations were made to 117 participants, workshops with 25 people and archeological excavation simulations with the participation of 1,100 students were organized. The total number of people reached by the project was 1,200 and the total amount allocated to it was 279,000 Reais.
Eco Dique Project (Cubatão) – Anglo American maintains support for the work of the sustainable clothing and accessories brand Eco Dique, an initiative of the Arte no Dique Institute of Cubatão. In 2008, the brand’s first collection was launched, and in 2009, Eco Dique started selling the pieces. The pieces are produced by about 40 students of the Arte no Dique Institute in Cubatão. The majority of the students are women between the ages of 30 and 50 and without prior experience in dressmaking. Two-thirds of the group only finished primary school, and 90% have a family income of up to three minimum salaries.
With the project’s deployment, a social company was created that can employ the students of the sewing course.
The brand’s shirts are made of “malhapet,” a fabric made from plastic from recycled PET bottles, with imprints inspired by images made by photographer Araquém Alcântara. Bags and accessories in banana leaf fibers are also part of the collection.
Professional capacity building for income generation is one of the identified concerns in the “Intercâmbio” (Interchange) Community Forums that are held each semester in the communities where Anglo American is active.
In 2009, the Eco Dique Project received support of approximately 176,000 Reais from the company.
Ser Project (Cubatão) – same public served as for the Eco Dique Project. Amount allocated: 42,000 Reais.
Pólen Project (Pollen Project) (Cubatão) – Anglo American’s resources supported the actions of the Pollen Project, which brought storytellers to seven schools in Cubatão. The initiative performed more than 25 presentations and more than 5,000 children benefited from it since the start of its activities in November 2008. The project also supported the 1st Cubatão Storyteller Encounter. The event was attended by city educators, who exchanged experiences in relation to the coverage and the utilization of the stories as a tool for the success of the education-learning relationship.
The Pollen Project was also responsible for capacity building workshops for educators and presentations in the Modelo Hospital in CubatĂŁo. The initiative reached a public of 1,000 students of the CubatĂŁo municipal education network and received 100,000 Reais in 2009.
Ler é uma Viagem (Reading is a Voyage) (Cubatão, Niquelândia and Barro Alto) – The project to encourage reading develops studies to encourage the habit and the joy of reading in children, youth and adults throughout Brazil. In Cubatão this consisted of reading presentations in the João Rangel Simões Municipal Library and in the Padre José de Anchieta UME. The public reached was 300 people (children and educators). Amount allocated was 160.000 Reais.
Cubatão Sinfonia Project (Cubatão Symphony Project) (Cubatão) – Reached a public of 140 young people. Amount allocated was 450,000 Reais.
Fábrica do Saber (Knowledge Factory) (Cubatão) – Public reached was 760 people between Anglo American employees and 4,000 students of the municipal education network. Amount allocated was 225,000 Reais.
Costurando o Futuro (Sewing the Future) (Niquelândia) – The project offers a free course of industrial sewing with a 6 month duration. In its first stage, 45 places were made available. Through the Sewing the Future program, Anglo American seeks to promote the generation of income and professional capacity building of women in the city of Niquelândia.
The selection of women with low incomes that can benefit from the initiative is done by the Matheus de Lima Institute. In this selection, priority is given to mothers who have a child with special needs, chosen together with the APAE (Association of Parents and Friends of Special Needs Children) in Niquelândia.
The amount allocated for the project was 98,965 Reais in 2009.
Sinfonia de Cerrado (Cerrado Symphony) (Niquelândia) – The guitar orchestra is composed of children between the ages of 9 and 17 who live in socially vulnerable and low-income conditions. The music workshops takes place twice per week and the participants can stay in the project, evolving from the basic level, passing through medium until advanced level, during the whole period that their age allows them. In 2009, 350 children and adolescents were part of the project. The amount allocated was 379,380 Reais.
Grupo Teatral Namakaca (Namakaca Theatre Group) (Niquelândia and Barro Alto) – The group presents a spectacle for children and young adults that relies strongly on humor and acrobatic tricks, juggling, unicycles, as well as a musical presentation.
Grupo Teatral Limpando o Olho (Cleaning the Eye Theatre Group) (Niquelândia) – Some pieces were presented in the “quilombo” community of Muquem, focused on environmental subjects. The financial support for this project totaled 33,738.50 Reais.
Camerata de Violões (Barro Alto) – A project with 160 students of the Association of Culture Friends of Barro Alto (AACBA) was completed. They received orientation on musical and socialization questions. The project received financial support of 356,255 Reais.
Projeto Batuqueira – 150 students of the Partners of Cultural Art of Barro Alto Association (APAC) benefitted from this project, of which 70 were from Barro Alto and 80 from the city of Souzalândia. Amount allocated for the project: 150,000 Reais.
Orquestra de Violões (Guitar Orchestra) (Catalão) – The orchestra, associated with the Nova Vida Foundation, has been sponsored through the Rouanet Law since 2000. In 2009, it received direct emergency support of 120,000 Reais.
