Communities
Working on local development
In 2009, the social policies of Anglo American Brasil were strengthened in the communities where the company has operations, in spite of the economic crisis. The increase of the presence of residents in the “Intercâmbio” (Exchange) Community Forums, the positioning of the company, in the eyes of the communities, as a factor for local development, and the presentation of the Community Involvement Plans (PECs) for the 2009/2011 triennial are some of the factors that reinforce the social management work done by the organization.
The social projects were also highlights, and contributed to bringing knowledge, training and leisure to communities, as well as local development and greater access to socio-cultural programs.
Partnership of Results
In 2009, Care Brasil, which is part of Care International, one of the largest social action NGOs in the world, began implementation of a new project in Barro Alto (GO) after signing a partnership with Anglo American in 2008. This initiative includes the promotion of socio-economic development through the training of entrepreneurs, diversification of the local economy and improvement to the educational system, covering both the urban and rural areas of the cities where the company has operations. The goal of this partnership is to foster local entrepreneurship to lead to sustainability of new businesses in the region.
Care Brasil, with extensive experience in similar programs in other Brazilian states, works on three levels: education, income generation and social mobilization, in order to orient civil society on its rights and duties, and to help it organize itself to obtain the best proposals, from both private initiative and the government.
In 2009, the Entrepreneurial Management course was held for small, medium and large merchants (with formal or informal business activity) in Barro Alto. In addition to providing training in entrepreneurship for the participants, the course sought to pique the interest of the community to improve their knowledge referring to the identification of new opportunities for sustainable development.
The classes, held between March 26 and April 8, 2009, presented management techniques for the execution of administrative, accounting-financial, management and market processes in the projects.
At the request of Anglo American, Care also conducted visits to evaluate the training needs in the communities of Ouvidor and Cubatão.
