Climate Changes

Risks and opportunities with climate changes

The initiatives developed by Anglo American to fight climate changes are focused on efficiency in the use of energy – such as the replacement of low-performance engines with high-performance engines – and reduction in greenhouse effect gas (GEE) emissions.

The company has a GEE inventory, which defines the standard of emissions and analyzes reduction opportunities. All units have established goals for 10% reduction in greenhouse effect gas emissions by 2014, considering 2004 as the base.

Issues in connection with climate changes are discussed at Critical Analysis meetings at operational units and are taken to senior management on a monthly basis.

Anglo American voluntarily adheres to compliance with global corporate standards and guidelines concerning GEE emissions, use of renewable energies, investment in new technologies, opportunities associated to the clean development mechanism (MDL, in its acronym in Portuguese) and dissemination of concepts in connection with the theme.

Anglo American understands that climate changes represent significant risks to its activities, as well as to the communities where it operates, which risks are already commented in the report 2008 (http://www.angloamerican.com.br/aa_br/development/relatorios-sociedade/). In this sense, the company maintains in Brazil a greenhouse effect gas inventory, which informs its emission pattern and enables an analysis on opportunities for reduction of these emissions. All company units have established goals for 10% reduction in emissions by 2014, considering 2004 as the base. Anglo American also operates in the control of reforestation areas for fire prevention.
