Tail gas
Economic alternative
The search for creative solutions focused on the use of usually disregarded energy sources lead Anglo American to use tail gas at the Copebrás Cubatão unit.
This residual gas arising from the process for production of black fume, which serves as basis for the manufacture of tires and dyestuff in the past was simply burnt and turned into carbon dioxide by Columbian, company near the Anglo American plant in Cubatão.
Nowadays, tail gas is a more economic alternative in terms of energy source at the Granulation Production Unit and is also an opportunity for reduction of CO2 emissions on a worldwide basis.
Even though Copebrás emissions have increased by 19.3%, compared to global emissions for this process (Copebrás and Columbian), CO2 emissions sustained a reduction of 46%.
